Laissez-faire meritocracy will not come overnight, nor can all of its parts be permitted to come about simultaneously. To establish a Protectorate prior to the full liberalization of the economy and a thorough cleansing and editing of the statutes would be imprudent; it would establish for the Protector the ability to commit actions that counter the intent of his office. Moreover, the question will doubtless be posed: how shall the first Protector be selected?

By living in this country, and working in this country, and taking the benefits we do, and really, in the greater scheme of things, doing very little about the "holes," we are sanctioning it.

I have in my lifetime been "out" and I have been "in." When I was out, I railed against the system. When I was in, I did what I could to make things better for others. Things don't remain static. People who are now in will be out and the out will be in. And so it goes. Hopefully, over time, the swings are not so dramatic and the penalties for being out only minor.

We set up affirmative action because the country owed negroes compensation and to give them a leg up. Well, the leg is up enough now that nature can take it's course. In creating that leg up we compromised some things that are very dear. It would be a mistake to further extend and institutionalize it.
