zonder,
Excellent article. I'm in agreement with most of the premise that we cannot foist ourselves on another country and culture. Ultimately the Iraqis must govern themselves as they see, fit. This has been my view from the beginning.

I have opposed the war in Iraq from the beginning as well. But now that we have invaded, we must participate in an orderly withdrawal. One that will not create a vacuum for another Saddam or a terrorist Taliban regime. This can be best achieved in my opinion by internationalizing the situation. By bringing in the UN and the Arab League to assure that a peaceful transition to the next Iraqi government can occur.

The US will not be successful in bringing a western government to a middle eastern country. It's fool hardy to try in the manner in which Bush sees. We can have much more influence in the middle east, and anywhere in the world, with the carrot, not the stick.
