See what reasonable debate can bring. We have been carrying on this conversation for nearly a week. We finally decided that when our assumption that the other person advocates the extreme worst case scenario that ultimately agreement on the larger issues of life are possible.

Now if we could convince our elected officials to drop the "all or nothing" positions that the parties have staked out, maybe they could accomplish something good for our country.

However, this goes against my old Libertarian background that says "If the government sets out to help you, you will be the first one hurt." (I believe the law of unintended consequences was developed after watching us try our hand at social engineering.)

"The question I have about the last one is what would you propose the government do about it? People are weak ..."

I do not propose that the government do anything about the vices I listed except to give children a chance to learn both sides of "to do or not to do" so that they can make up their mind. I believe it is up to the parents to teach and to give their kids the information they need to rational decisions.

We all have a sin nature that enables us to be tempted by the pleasures of the world. I indulged mine for far too long to the detriment of my career and perhaps the time I spent with my family. My mission today is to help anyone I can avoid falling into the same trap or help them get out of it if they are already in it.

Now Freedom is a lovely thing, God gave us all Free will. The trick is learning how to use it with out screwing it up.
