Rudedog, Re: <Intel has at least 10 engineers on site at Microsoft doing 64 bit work ...>

My guess is that those 10 engineers are working very hard bailing Itanic and that AMD64 and IA64 have not a whole lot in common other than the 64 in the name.

I'd guess that 10 random engineers working on X86-32 would know a whole lot more about what to do about extending X86 to 64 bit than the current 10+ engineers working on 64 bit.

What percentage of source code in common would you expect of IA64 to AMD64 as opposed to X86-32 to AMD64?

I'd expect the second to have more in common. No?

<Still, there are many hurdles even for mighty Intel >

Absolutely!

The ball is in AMD's hands but AMD (especially the marketing side of it) is so darned weak, I have a hard time seeing AMD running away with the ball. Could happen but the odds are against it given the delays in Windows and desktop apps.
