to I was in effect saying that an atheist could view abortion as the killing of a human being. I would add that in fact some of them do think of it as that.

I'm among those that do, when the egg has become a chicken. And to me it's obvious that happens before birth. You know how I can tell? By looking at a baby born at, say, 6 months, or 7! :) It's not rocket science, and it's not a "technical" definition of the sort that requires a person to say that the day before the birthday, that's not a human being, but the day after, it is. And it's not a "magical" (also technical) definition forcing the religious "ensoulment" concept on everybody.

My definition requires everyone to do a grown up thing. Accept that we can't be sure we have perfect timing, but can decide on timing more perfect, and decent, than either forcing unwilling citizens to gestate ova, or killing little babies.

My guess is that non-ideologues (it's ideology that claims an 8 month fetus isn't a baby), non-magical-thinkers, working with neurologists, could come up with a sane definition of "human being," and a humane cut off period for abortion. My guess is that it would be someplace between three and five months.

If it's much after that, then imo it's infanticide, and the discussion should be of that. It's word games to pretend otherwise, imo.
