Chinese TV to go digital by 2005
Beijing, Oct 27. (PTI): China plans to launch digital television broadcast in 33 major cities by 2005 and hopes to provide over 120 channels by the time the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games are held here.

There are plans to shut down analog television broadcast in 33 major cities by the end of 2005, China Daily reported today.

Also in 2005, China expects to begin satellite broadcast on more than 120 digital channels, the official newspaper quoted an announcement from the state administration of radio, film and television as saying.

Earlier this year, the administration designated 33 major cities as trial broadcast sites for digital cable television, hoping to sign up at least 30 million digital subscribers by the year 2005.

To reach that goal, it is estimated that at least one million digital subscribers need to sign up this year, the administration's deputy director, Zhang Haitao said.
