RE:"I am a little concerned about the complacency around how much time AMD would have before Intel could field a product. If Intel determined to do a superset of AMD64, OS software would not be much of a barrier, despite the claims of some folks here"...

I'm very concerned.
It took AMD-Athlon a year after release to start making significant market share gains on Intel. Intel still turned the battleship.
So Opteron has been out about 6 months and Athlon64, one month. Intel has already started the FUD and will release a x-86-64 chip when the market "needs" it...which will be within 6 mos. to a year...IMHO.

Without big help from Microsoft, AMD will not pull it off. IMHO

Rudedog, Re: < I am a little concerned about the complacency around how much time AMD would have before Intel could field a product. If Intel determined to do a superset of AMD64, OS software would not be much of a barrier, despite the claims of some folks here.>

You can absolutely believe me that there's no complacency on my part on that subject. An INTC superset of AMD64 would be the worst thing that INTC could do to AMD.(Even worse, IMO, than getting strained silicon, .09 on foot diameter wafers working.) I just don't think it's likely to happen within the first three quarters of next year. (I think there's a post I wrote around here somewhere I put up to that effect about last March or so.)

And, I think the pressure on MS to release their AMD64 stuff will be *INTENSE* by summer '04.

And, I think Athlon was designed with AMD64 in mind and PIV wasn't.

BWDIK? I'm just a software kind of guy.
