I don't know if this article was posted here earlier. I read a translation of the complete article yesterday.

Dying to Kill Us
By ROBERT A. PAPE
CHICAGO — Suicide terrorism has been on the rise around the world for two decades, but there is great confusion as to why. Since many such attacks — including, of course, those of Sept. 11, 2001 — have been perpetrated by Muslim terrorists professing religious motives, it might seem obvious that Islamic fundamentalism is the central cause. This presumption has fueled the belief that future 9/11's can be avoided only by a wholesale transformation of Muslim societies, which in turn was a core reason for broad public support of the invasion of Iraq.

However, this presumed connection between suicide terrorism and Islamic fundamentalism is wrongheaded, and it may be encouraging domestic and foreign policies that are likely to worsen America's situation...."

my understanding is we did exactly what the writer proposed.. We paid off a tribal leader to guard the pipe lines.. It worked for many a few weeks then he wanted more money .. we refused and the pipelines started getting blown up , i assume by his tribe, .. I think it is more complicated than appears.. it sounds like the system in Afgan. we get a tribal leader to fight with us for money. But once they get a better deal they are off to where ever the money is higher.. Iraq. needs to build its police and military back up, get some kind of gov. and in the meantime get some countries to supply troops to guard key facilities like pipe lines, power stations, pumping stations..

Only until they get a Iraq leadership functioning can Iraq turnaround.
