tgp,

I am just an application programmer, I don't really know what's under the hood.

As far as AMD64 version, I think IA64 provides a better base than x86-32, since it is tested to be 64 bit clean.

But if the answer is 99% to 98% the answer to the real point I was trying to make is that there's most likely less work for MSFT to bring out and maintain AMD64 than IA64. Much less. Half as much? I'd guess 1/5th as much(99% to 94%).

Much less, assuming that IA64 version has a complete, fully functional feature set. But that assumption is false. There were some articles recently about the sorry state of Windows IA64 and some apps, and rudedog recently pointed out that the situation is similar on desktop Windows IA64. So there may be new development taking place simultaneously for IA64 and AMD64, beyond just retesting IA64 tested code for AMD64.

And of course, there is the driver situation. AMD64 version looks like a more mainstream version, and it will need a broader support.

The problem for AMD is that something is out for IA64, and nothing is out for AMD64, which delays third party software developers.
