FWIW, after spending most of the last 15 years overseas, I could bore everyone to death with the chronicles of screwups, corruption, stupidity and hopeless BS in many countries. I am cynical enough now to believe that much of it is chronic.

When I look at the US, I see a country that should be a world leader and set the standards for others to shoot for. I get very disappointed when we fail at that task. We can do better if we push ourselves to do the right thing. Many countries will never get close.

But I will do my best to widen my firing range for nonmoderate nonsense to bitch about in the future.

I understand how an American might take criticisms of the Bush administration personally. You really shouldn't, though.

I lived in places where printing an anti-government article was a death wish. I know very well what you mean, and yes, I agree with you that there are far worse places to live in than the US.

This is not a popularity contest for best spots to live out your years, though. Most criticism of the US administration that I see is not on how they make life worse for Americans. It is not about domestic issues at all, in fact. It is how they have mocked international law and institutions by invading another sovereign country based on lies. It is about how they undermined the UN, the principal reason why the world has not had many major wars since WWII. It is about the legal and human rights fiasco called Guantanamo, where hundreds of people are held for more than a year now with no charge, and no hope for a future of any kind.

In places where a repressive government does not allow free speech, that affects their people only. When the US administration so blatantly errs, it affects all of us living on this planet.
