You can find rational as well as practical reasons why we observe DST.

I understand that lots of people like it. What I don't understand, though, is why folks think there's magic in it. Actually, I read though that site but I found mention of many helpful benefits from making the sun more accessible, but no discussion of the merits this particular vehicle for doing so. The most recent decision to standardize it was made on emotional reactions to a proxy, not on the merits of the procedure.

Firefighters are trying to instill the habit of changing the batteries in smoke detectors when we set our clocks. Utility districts love the energy savings, and 70 countries around the world observe DST.

Firefighters could just as easily instill the habit of changing batteries on Christmas and the Fourth of July. Time changes are just the convenience they chose.

Not to mention.....sun worshipers wouldn't have it any other way...especially us northern sun worshipers.

The sun is exactly the same at any given point in time regardless of what your watch says.

I understand worshiping the sun. I scratch my head, though, at the notion of worshiping the current clumsy vehicle, a proxy, for making that sun more accessible as though it were the sun itself.

I've been intending to relocate ever since I retired but have overcome with inertia. Perhaps I should give favorable consideration to Arizona or Hawaii. Before the next time change. <g>

A young lady who had worked for us was between homes for two weeks in March of '00. We let her move herself and her stuff into our basement, 2,000 sq ft finished walkout with a bathroom. Last March I was in the basement and heard a smoke detector beeping. She had left her detector under the pool table and it took 3 years for the battery to get low. Changing the batteries every 6 months is a little previous.

Yup, Italy does the same thing. They call it "Summer Time" instead of daylight savings time.
