M, I'm going to torture the thread with this one more time. Yes, I know I said that the last time. This medium can be so frustrating. I used to think that I had a pretty good command of the English language... <g>

I'm not sure folks think it's "magic" when we change our clocks twice a year. In fact I've never heard it put quite like that.

No, I didn't mean "magic" as in superstition. Not the best choice of words. Let me try an alternative example of the phenomenon of confusing the vehicle with the benefit resulting in undue credit being given to the vehicle, which is what I think endears DST to so many people. I apologize for deviating from plain language earlier.

Let's say that we all live in an apartment complex. You decide to buy a home and are just thrilled with the results. You are invited back to the apartment complex for a party and at it you go on and on about the joys of home ownership. You advocate home ownership for everyone.

So I ask you what it is about home ownership that is so special that we should all do it. You answer that you just love having that extra bedroom so the kids don't have to share. And the side by side refrigerator so you can reach your frozen food. And your commute is now so much easier.

So I question you about what that has to do with home ownership. I suggest that you could have stayed in the apartment and just gotten a different refrigerator. You could have moved to a different apartment with an extra bedroom. Or you could have moved to a different apartment closer to your job or gotten a job closer to your apartment? Or you could have gotten all three by renting the house that you bought. I question why you are extolling the virtues of home ownership when home ownership is not salient to the benefits you describe. There doesn't seem to be anything in what you describe that necessitates or is inherent to home ownership.

You look at me like I'm nuts, and repeat your mantra about home ownership. And to reinforce your point, talk about now nice it is to have a blue bedroom.

The above was an alternate example of confusing the vehicle with the benefit. Just for the record.

I recognize that people are attached to DST and that we're not going to change in my lifetime. Just doing my semi-annual rant. Apologies to all.

As I'm doing that, I'm looking out the window into the dark. I would normally be at the pool by now but I'm finding more and more that I don't like driving in the dark--a problem that will only worsen as I get older--so I will have to go later when the pool is unfortunately busier. Maybe when I get in the car, if there's enough light, I will find my car manual and change the car clock... <g>
