Howard:

Your comments tweaked my memory and I remember that it was widely discussed that there was a correlation between soybeans and silver. Kind of strange that it has come up again.

The relationship between silver and beans was due to the proximity of the two trading pits on the floor. The silver traders would place their trades, and then turn around and
step into the soybean pits to execute trades in order to hedge their exposure or on lock limit moves in silver.

My wife and I visited the floor over 20 years ago. It was a guided tour. This was the explanation offered by the guide
when we were in the gallery watching and hearing all the
noise those traders make.
