Mahathir is actually a much more multifaceted and interesting character than you would guess from reading his news reports. He has a long-standing habit of making outrageous statements whenever he has a prominent audience, and he often comes off sounding weirder than Kim Jong-Il, which takes some doing. The proof of the pudding is in the eating, though, and the Malaysia he's leaving behind is probably the most progressive, prosperous, and tolerant state in the Muslim world, and without the benefit of major oil reserves.

Maybe we could arrange to have him take over Indonesia....
