Your example / explanation sounds good on paper, but to accomplish it with multiple homes is a HUGE Red Flag to the I.R.S. and Not easily done. It would also take quite a long time depending on the number of homes involved. It sounds like one of those late night buy and flip infomericals. Yes it can be done, but not as often or easily as is talked about.

Have you heard of depreciation recapture?
