Hey, I'm marching as fast as I can.

My old 60s legs are tired. Go forth and march.

You know, I don't want to do this old vs. young bit too heavily, but reflecting on the situation I tend to see that the younger generation are more vocal about civil rights issues than perhaps we were, but I see very little actual going out there and making it happen. Granted, the times are somewhat different and the solutions may have changed, but I don't see this generation of young people doing what our generation did. I don't seem them holding sit-ins or love-ins or sitting on railroad tracks or otherwise taking direct action. I don't see them going out in the streets to run voter registration drives. I don't see them holding Freedom schools to help educate undereducated minorities. I don't hear talk about the Peace Corps, which perhaps can be criticized for looking down on the locals but nonethelss did some wonderful work bringing clean water, medical clinics, eductation, rural electrification, farming improvements, cottage industries, and other down to earth improvements to what we called underdeveloped countries. I don't see teams of young people using their summer vacations to go into the slums and work with the families there repairiing homes. I see some email campaigns, but email campaigns take no real sacrifice to put on. I just don't see the commitment of self to accompany the expressions of belief.

Am I missing something, or is it just not there? Lots of talk, and I'm sure it's sincere, but not much down-and-dirty let's get our hands to work solving the problems we are concerned about.

Now, tell me I'm an old fuddy duddy, that every generation complains about the younger generation. But if you, also point me to what the young people are out there committing their bodies and their time to these days.
