I don't know, but no question after World War I our basic assumptions were thrown in doubt. Picasso entered his violent period, Joyce ended Ulysses with a rambling long stream of consciousness section tracking the miscellaneous thoughts of a character who hadn't even spoken until then. A reaction to the darker side of science, I suppose....

btw, alea is Latin for dice. Ya gotta watch them ivory cubes...
