[You] I thought he hit the mark here as well...

[Hanson] When a German chancellor wins reelection campaigning as an anti-American and trumpeting a new “German way,”

So far, so good. I criticized Schröder for his election campaign behavior on FADG about 80,000 messages ago.

it’s not hard to see behind his success an embittered populace, motivated by the belief that German cultural energy and economic prosperity (increasingly encumbered by the corporate welfare statism that is the real “German way”) don’t win sufficient status on the world stage

No, the widespread perception in Europe was and is that al Qaeda is the main terror threat, not Iraq. Regarding human rights Iraq was a horrible country but so are many other places on earth where nothing is done. I don't want to fan another flame war - enough flames in CA currently :-/ - I'm just describing the perception on my side of the Atlantic.

But at least we had fly-over rights...

and some other stuff. But Germany lacks the prerequisite for any foreign "heavy lifting" currently: a strong economy. I'd call it a success if there aren't South America-like unrests within the next five years.
