It used to be under the Texas constitution that a homeowner's house could not be siezed and sold by the state for all but a few offenses (including non payment of state taxes or non payment of the primary mortgate). That has now been changed. Now home equity is tied to credit cards and checking accounts where it can be frittered away a little at a time and the homestead can be seized for late payment on the credit card.
