It is alarming, I agree. And the fact of its widespread existence is one reason why this war in Iraq was a stupid sideshow to our real problems with the Islamic world. We are making it easy for people to continue to believe this crap

This crap is so devoid of any possibility of a reality check that it's very hard to see what difference our actual behavior could make. I would point out that they grew into these beliefs in the 90s, when we took terrorist hits with no real response, tried very hard to deliver the Palestinians a state, and rescued the Muslims of Bosnia and Kosovo, without making a dent in this world-view. Indeed, I think we made it worse, because someone with this world view regards a Palestinian state in the West Bank and Gaza as a humiliating surrender.

So being passive and 'nice' made it worse in the 90s and being agressive and responding to hits in the 00s makes it worse now. That's the beauty part of conspiracy theories; once you buy in, everything feeds the conspiracy.
