JF, Actually I think we need to roll back the tax cuts, cut some social services, and cut much of the "pork" that has slipped through recently.

Spending grew 7.9% in 2002 (probably due to 9/11) and 4.2% in 2001. In comparison, spending grew between 2% and 4% annually under Clinton, except for 2000 when spending grew by 5.1%. It's a fair guess that most of the spending controls under Clinton were accomplished via military cutbacks, i.e. the so-called "peace dividend" that turned into more spending for social programs.

Indeed, the social programs claimed a higher share of the budget pie, from 58.7% in 1993 to 65.5% in 2002, while defense has gone down from 20.7% in 1993 down to 16.2% in 1999 and up to 17.3% in 2002.

All these facts and more can be found here:

As for the "pork," think about this: Imagine if the "pork" were evenly distributed across all sections of the budget. Who's going to complain the most if we start cutting all of it away?
