Sidney, you are right that God never knew them. God really knows us all but here he is expressing that although they played their works to the hilt before men for recognition they never truly developed the humility to know Christ. Our greatest understanding and love of God comes after a downfall that deflates us to the point of looking to God instead of our prideful selves. When men set themselves up as judge over others it is a pitiable thing. Pity them - don't hate them. James
