About 25 years ago there was a push to get rid of the main battle tank- too vulnerable to cheap rockets, too heavy, too slow, using too much gas. Then came reactive armor and the M1 Abrams main battle tank. They led the columns into Baghdad.

There's people who want to get rid of aircraft carriers. Again, too vulnerable to cheap missiles. One nuclear tipped cruise missile takes out the entire battle group. But carriers are still our primary means of projecting airpower all over the globe.

Now Rummy wants to get rid of heavy artillery. Rummy's another reformer who knows better than the men who have to use the equipment. Rummy will eventually retire, and heavy artillery will still be there. Because the professional army, and Marines for that matter, know it's indispensable.
