Wayne,

Re: Funny a few days ago people were saying that clearning dead trees was a giveaway to the huge corporate timber industry.

You must get your news from right-wing talk radio or the Faux News Network. The debate and the contention about the corporate timber industry is that they had no intention to use the Healthy Forest Initiative to do what Bush said they were going to do, i.e. make the urban-wildland interface safer.

Even today, the Healthy Forest Bill that is in conference is being debated. One particular item is particularly galling. It is the requirement on the percentage of pre-commercial thinning that needs to be done within 20 miles of developed communities. The "greens" want the percentage to be higher than the 50% in the current language. The industry wants less.

In other words, even if this this bill passes, it won't do what Bush sold it as. In large measure, it won't clear the brush and fuels from the areas where it poses the greatest threat to the residences of Americans.

This bill is a scam.

And here's something that is even more damning about Bush w/r/t the wildfires of Southern California. His timing couldn't have been worse for stonewalling the only guy who appeared to understand the threat, Gray Davis.
