I would use ETFs unless it's a small specialty fund with superior returns. You can buy ETFs for just about any slice of the market you like, with a cheap commission and no distributions to mess up your taxes until you sell the shares themselves.

A great site for research is etfconnect.com. You can often buy ETFs for less than the value of the shares they hold if you are lucky. And it's legal! LOL.
