Closed economy and protection of local companies can also lead to very local protectionism. Hence it could become localization and the return to self sufficiency. The Jesuits in one Pennsylvania community live off the land, make their own furnitures, built own homes, wear leather sandals walking on the snow, hunt and fish. Gravel roads are just fine, no need for asphalt road - too hot to walk on in the summer. They couldn't care less about radio or TV's. They are happy and content with their way of life and its all American locally made. And that's today, not a hundred years ago. Actually it was 5 years ago when I was there, and I assume they are still there. Some patriotic folks want to be very "American" and feel the need to go back to the basics. If such were the case starting thirty - forty years ago, most of the vehicles on US roads would look very much like the '56 Chevys and Ramblers or the 70's Chevy Novas. Maybe stop with the Blazers and the Caddies - those are the ultimates. No need to compete and progress, no need for greater efficiencies, no need for those SUV's nor those beamers nor lexus, nor cd's, pda's, XM radios, etc.
