From the time of the collapse of the Ottoman Empire we have not always acted with our best long term national interests in mind. Whether it was dividing up the Ottoman Empire after WWI, addressing German WWI reparations, the Nazi WWII buildup, the communist threat or the development of militant Islam. We either ignore threats until they are too big to ignore or we take actions that create bigger problems later on. Over the last 100 years we have led the winning battles against Fascism / Nazism, communism and now finally Islamo Fascism. Hopefully we have the will as a nation to start pointing the Mideast in a better direction through our liberation of Iraq. But the festering sore we have helped perpetuate in Saudia Arabia wont be an easy one to heal.
