Mephisto,

The President of the United States is often trapped inside a cocoon spun by those who surround him. There's good reason to believe that Ronald Reagan's Alzheimer's actually incapacitated him while he was still the figurehead President, with the country actually run then (as now) by a shadow committee of very venal, corrupt and self-serving apparatchiks who did everything they could then as now to enrich themselves, their corporate buddies and simply maintain the fiction that this country actually has a President.

Bush is completely incapable of thinking on his feet. Whenever he's "off script", he pulls a boner like his inept "bring 'em on" comment. You could see how transparently scripted his last "press conference" was, where he actually had a list of the "reporters" he was to call on in a particular order. The questions were all pre-screened by Bush's staff. And all his responses were canned. Written for him by the real power behind the throne.

If things get really dicey for the Republicans next year, they may well decide that Bush is expendable. He could easily be the sort of martyr as a victim of an assassination that would unite the nation, once again cowering in fear and trepidation, into the arms of a strong leader. In a time of crisis, this nation would not fail to fall in line and follow a stern father type figure like Dick Cheney.
