Bush's motives were pretty obvious when he attacked Iraq.

Saddam gone = cheap oil
cheap oil = economic rebound
economic rebound = re-election in 2004

That is why he was so impatient and used any twisted logic to justify the war. Saddam was a bad leader but it was not Bush's job to get rid of him when there are so many other dictators in the world.
Iraq was only selected to help the US economy and that was a very very selfish motive. If he had waited longer and gotten support from other developed countries, one could have made a case that maybe it was not all about oil. The French/German/Russian leaders could not be convinced that it was anything other than oil although they won't say it publically.

The irony is that the economy is picking up even with high oil prices. Oil would have been cheaper there been no invasion of Iraq. Bad Karma --being a selfish liar and not caring how many innocents get killed on both sides.

I can already see a hasty retreat of US soldiers next year after a hastily set up Iraqi army----then leaving. Afterwards a civil war starts that kills thousands or even hundreds of thousands..and later claiming that the civil war was not caused by him.
