I agree with you here (in part) - I also think that OBL and his followers are interested in having an ongoing armed conflict with the US. Moreover, if we would NOT go after them militarily after 9/11, they would continue escalating the attacks until we would. They "needed" to get "infidels" to fight and kill Muslims in order to radicalize the Islamic world, which would create turmoil and, hopefully for them, a "Revolutionary Situation" – an opportunity for Islamic radicals to capture political power in their countries. I think that it was inevitable that eventually they would succeed in bringing us into the conflict. At this point, I just hope that they may have miscalculated - and bitten off a bigger piece then they can swallow. Indeed, they may have considered the possibility of losing Afghanistan, but causing a major American military presence in the Middle East was probably a surprise to them.
