I went to classes on gun safety and was taught marksmanship on an indoor range where safety was the primary consideration. We kept guns in the house, in a locked gun cabinet, and with the ammunition stored in a separate location, also locked. 30 years ago, this was a typical household in most rural areas, and not uncommon in the city. A gun was not an object of fear and loathing, it was a tool, and like most tools requires a certain amount of training and care to be handled in a safe manner. Over the past 30 years there has been a massive propaganda campaign to disarm American citizens. Articles I've seen on the topic show government campaigns specifically stating goals for anti-gun propaganda to appear in the media on a daily basis during the peak years of the media blitz. Under the circumstances, you could hardly expect to arm 70 novices and expect them to handle an emergency situation, any more than you could hand a similar number of inexperienced persons a chain saw and expect them to cut down trees without causing themselves harm. When I speak of 70 armed citizens vs. 5 hijackers, I'm not talking about 70 brainwashed idiots, I'm talking about a polite social order, similar to 30 years ago, where gun ownership is taken for granted, but not without assuming the personal responsibility that goes along with it. Years ago I read an article about a town where a city ordinance required every person over 18 to carry a firearm. That town had the lowest crime rate of any city in the nation. Funny thing about criminals, they tend to feel very maladjusted when their intended victims are unwilling to cooperate.
