I only meant people who are fully prepared to give up Jay Leno, as necessary, for eighteen years to focus on raising their kids to be good citizens. I agree with you that healthy, productive people can come from way less than ideal backgrounds. Early adversity is often an asset, actually. But cavalier child production is not something to be encouraged.

everybody starts committed.

Nuts.

Some babies are conceived purely by accident with no real desire on the parents parts to have them. Some are conceived because a couple in a failing marriage buys in to the fiction that having a child will save the marriage. It won't. Some couples conceive because it's expected of them, by parents, by society. Some conceive because they want a designer child to go with their designer homes, cars, and clothes, with no idea what is entailed in raising a child.

Many parents don't start committed to the child. Many.
