Razing towns is dicey, but all that is necessary is the continued indiscriminate killing of Iraqis along with Americans and others. Eventually, breaking up the cabal that is causing much of the trouble will seem necessary.

I cannot see abandoning those Sunni who helped us to the tender mercies of the Ba'athists. And I do not see how we could control it externally: if we have any kind of control, it will depend upon having agents inside, on the ground, to enforce our will. Someone is always present as a target. As for power sharing with the Turks and the Iranians, that is a recipe for having our friends the Kurds fight against us, and for civil war between pro- Iranian and anti- Iranian Shi'ites. In other words, it just another way to descend into disorder.......
