I find myself agreeing with Carl Marx on religion, it IS the opiate of the people. It's comforting to believe there is a higher power that has your best interests at heart, loves and cares for you. It's worth the price of faith, that is, belief without reason. Many wonderful and horrible things are done for faith. 9/11 was done for faith, so are church shelters, charities and soup kitchens. So was the Inquisition and the Crusades. It's much harder to admit that you are just another intelligent animal in an existential universe, alone, and when you die you just recycle into energy and dirt.
