Hi Karen,
I think Gephardt could end up being the strongest Democratic contender to unseat Bush. Think he could win some of those midwest, border and even a southern state or two. I dont believe any other candidate can be as strong in this region. In order for him to pull off an election victory, he must come up with an alternative to bush in iraq that independents will buy into. I sense he has taken the first steps by supporting the 87 billion dollars and criticising Bush policy but not being anti war. Of course this way to win an election makes it more difficult for him to take the nomination in left wing primaries the democrats committ political suicide in. Clinton pulled this feat off. Can Gephardt? For me who largely supports the president, i think a credible opponent we can live with is as president is quite important. I get sick when i think about President Dean unless it is James the dead actor or Jimmie the sausage maven. Those of you who like dean's last iteration as libertarian governor of vermont should have worries here too. For me he is just one of those arrogant Doctors who really brought us the trial lawyers and HMOs. The golf on wednesday at the country club type who we in the proletariat always detested most. Mike
