re: Interesting that we weren't the target of Middle Eastern terrorist until we started stationing troops in the region.

do you know for how long we were stationed in saudi arabia, for example?

As far as I know, since August, 1990 when Saddam Huessein invaded Kuwait (perhaps we had some military advisors there beforehand, but that wasn't public knowledge and certainly wasn't upsetting the fundementalists to the point that they wanted to attack us). We've had troops there ever since August, 1990 and recently announced our intentions of leaving, except for 1,000 military advisers. A good idea in my opinion. We weren't the subject of terrorist attacks from Middle-Easterners on any largely organized scale pre-1990 (there were a few small incidents) and perhaps a lowering of our military prescene and the settlement of the Isrealie/Palestinian conflict will once again lessen our terrorist threat from that region.

re: had more enlightened policies,

like?

Like, a massive program to make our economy more fuel efficient or to find an alternative energy source like hydrogen, both of which would make the Middle East much less relevant to our existence. It's been a lack of leadership and will that has made us so dependent on foreign oil. It certainly isn't due to a lack of financial resources. Geeze, we're spending $160 Billion on Iraq this year, with hardly any questions asked. The money is there, the will to do the enlighten/right thing is not. Also, withholding money from Isreal to force them to the table with the Palestinians and perhaps offering some major carrots to settle that dispute would be an enlightened approach to the Middle East as well.

re: if the RepubliCONS really are interested in dealing with WMDs and terrorists, why not deal with the ones in the former Soviet Union countries that had tons of WMDs at one point

are you suggesting that we would invade russia? That should be fun....

BTW neither russia nor NK never used it's WMD as opposed to Iraq

Certainly not. But, if I was an anti-terrorism agent in the U.S. government I'd be very concerned about all the nuclear and chemical/biological weapons (WMDs) that were produced during the Soviet era. I'd be using all the diplomatic and financial resources at my disposal to make sure they don't fall into the wrong hands. I just don't get this over-arching urgency and concern about Iraq's minscule WMD program when any determined terrorists could obtain them elsewhere like North Korea or the former Soviet republics. WMDs have been used for propaganda purposes.

re: Why are our priorities so focused outside of this country?

in case you have not noticed but US is highly dependant on foreign trade

Yeah but, I also notice a lot of other problems in this country that go unadressed. I find it laughable when Bush talks about rebuilding Iraq's infrastructure with OUR tax money while our infrastructure crumbles. I think our priorities are all screwed up. Yes, we need to be engaged in the world for commerce and military and cultural reasons. But, $160 Billion could be put to a lot of good uses right here at home. I do not support this inane policy. It so obvious that it's an effort to divert money into Republican coffers like the military and oil industries. Money spent domestically would go towards more Democractic oriented interests like big cities and unions and public works. There's a lot of waste in that too, but I'd rather see the money wasted on things here at home and make a difference, than see it wasted on some country I will never set foot in.
