JF, Yes, I would rather see government funds spent on infrastructure, or social programs, or R&D for renewable energy, or... almost anything other than "defense"

Wouldn't we all? If only we didn't have to defend our freedoms, or our nation, or our allies, or take out any threats to world peace. Imagine what the human race could accomplish if only we could all just get along ...

Meanwhile, you might think 17% of our budget on defense is a lot, but that pales in comparison to the Reagan years (a peak of 28%) or even before that, where up to 50-60% was consumed by national defense. We now live in a much safer world today than we did 15 years ago, or especially 50 years ago. Let's try and keep it that way by confronting the remaining threats to world peace, instead of trying to "appease" madmen. Or do you trust that said madmen would never work with, harbor, or do business with the "real" terrorists?
