your expectations are WAY too high. Ever heard of the phrase, "testing," from your local microphone person. Testing is an important function of getting the sound right. In KVHI's case, data is needed in hundreds of situations. They'll get it right soon enough.
You can count on it.

They were very careful to only allow resellers that are in the business of working on vehicles.

This is basic knowledge to experienced installers but way over the head of buy the box and install at home DYIrs.
