Saudi forces kill two militants

RIYADH: Saudi security forces shot dead two militants in a clash in Makkah on Monday, the interior ministry said. But a London-based opposition figure Saad Faqih of Movement for Islamic Reform in Arabia told AFP that the casualties among militants and security forces were a lot higher.

"Saudi authorities were able to prevent a terrorist attack being prepared by terrorists, which did not respect the sanctity of the holy city of Makkah and the month of Ramazan," an interior ministry official said, quoted by the state news agency SPA.

The Saudi authorities surrounded the suspects, at which point the militants opened fire with machine-guns and hand grenades, and security sources responded, the official added. He said one security officer was wounded and the two militants were killed as they tried to flee in two cars.

He said that the security forces found a cache of arms in the cars including Kalashnikovs, pistols, hand grenades, rocket-propelled grenades and barrels with powder used for explosive purposes, as well as passports, ID cards and thousands of flyers bearing the picture of Osama bin Laden.

The security forces had been hunting a gang of six armed men and located them holed up in a building in Ghadra in the city of Al-Sharayaa, a security source told AFP. Two of the gang members were killed and four escaped heading east to the mountains with police giving chase. While a security forces helicopter hovered overhead, police fired back at the militants as they were attempting to flee the area in two cars, hitting one of the vehicles and killing two of its occupants.
