Besides, I personally think the fears of America becoming a Nazi-like police state are even more irrational than the fears of terrorism. And I think most Americans are smart enough to know the difference between acts of security and acts of totalitarianism.

Absolutely.

This notion that Ashcroft's DOJ has started us down some slippery slope to a police state are just extremist over-reaction.

In difficult times it is necessary for us to give up some of our "rights", although we do not have to give up broad, fundamental rights. When the difficulty has passed, our judicial system will move back the other direction (probably, so far that we are once again at risk).

These are just a few years out of a long past and a long future. Although, the thought of some liberals screaming that we should pay reparations to those held at Guantanamo Bay does make me bristle a bit...

Ten,

re: Besides, I personally think the fears of America becoming a Nazi-like police state are even more irrational than the fears of terrorism.

Well, at least you admit that fears of terrorism are irrational. I'm more afraid of the government taking away our freedoms than some outside force. I guess in that way I'm an ultra right wing wacko conservative.

re: Security is freedom, and vice-versa.

No, the opposite is true. Freedom has to be constantly defended, it's the most insecure thing in the world. That's one of those old conservative principles that seem to have been forgotten by the new, talk show, Project for the New American Century conservatives.

Along with balanced budgets, no nation building, free trade, and a healthy dose of isolationism. These guys are not your traditional conservatives, they have an agenda, and no principle is going to stand in their way.
