Part of our difference in reaction is probably a Venus/Mars situation, Karen. But your post triggered another problem in our difference that I think will affect next years campaign.

One of the major charges against Bush that the media believes and backs is that we "blew it" in our negotiations with the French and the Russians. That if we had not been so "arrogant" and "unilateral" we would have had support during the war.

But it is now being confirmed from captured documents and interrogations that the French and Russians were not only opposing us in the UN, they were actively supporting Saddam in his determination to hold out against us. They were on his side! Nothing we could have done would have got them to help us. They were "rope a doping" us.

The French/Russians bought the "weaklings" argument about us also. They thought we were so afraid of taking casualties that we would set back for a month and just run an air war, and that they could negotiate a peace fro Saddam.

The real "Shock and Awe" of the war was the realization by the world of just how good our Military is. No Army in the world can stand up to them. The only ones who could even give them a hard time are the Brits and the Israelis, our best allies.

What we did in the north against the Iraqis with Special Forces and pinpoint Air was unbelievable. Even our own top military didn't think we could do it. They kept pushing the "edge of the envelope" and the troops performed things that nobody knew was possible.

Watch this secret war against us by our allies come out during the campaign when Bush is accused of being "unilateral." It will be saved until then. Plus, a lot of it is still being confirmed.

The biggest mistake on the "Arrogance" side was the PR bit with the carrier. But that is a minor issue in the overall picture. I really believe this constant drumbeat of hated from the left is going to really hurt them during the actual election. They are falling back on the "Vietnam" argument from the 60s and thinking they can win with it. "Apples and Oranges," IMO.

People are unhappy over the casualties. They still believe we were right to go in. As long as they see progress in Iraq, they will support Bush.
