2000 years ago a significant minority in the middle east resisted what was known as Hellenization. This was the tendancy for Greek (Alexander the Great) and Roman customs and cultures to supplant the indigenous culture. The same process continues today with American culture now at the forefront of modernity.

Nobody hates freedom except for those who are dictators or those who have an economic interest in the repression needed to attain an economic result. This is pretty much why America, over the decades, has had so very many American-friendly dictators.
