A funny thing happened (well, sort of funny) at the supermarket yesterday. The perky young lass who checked my groceries asked me if I had a 'senior citizen's card.' I'd never been asked that before. I knew the day was coming, but not this quick! I think it was because of the brim I was wearing, a style favored by codgers. Unsettling, nonetheless. The person in back of me in line tried to console me by saying, "they give you one at 55 now..." Not much consolation.... I just hope I never get too old to boogaloo. Great interview with Murray Kempton's son, who has written an excellent history of American music. Maybe you came across the review in the NYRB. identitytheory.com
