Interesting speculation about what was going on in SH's head as war approached:

I think this article says a lot about how right the Administration was to have made the demands on the UN, then to have marginalized it. The simple truth is that the UN was a front. The French & the Russians were telling Saddam he had nothing to worry about, they would veto.

This is the reason the UN has no place in these matters. I don't think we need to abolish it, but we should never again defer to it in deciding whether military action is called for.
