The support really wasn't that major but yes the US government supported Saddam when he looked like he might lose a war against Iran because at the time Iran was considered a bigger threat. But Bush Sr. wasn't president until after the Iran Iraq war was over. In any case it is true that he was never considered our best friend by any US administration, or by anyone else with half a brain. He was only considered the lesser of two evils.
