I've always wondered how this administration thought they were going to secularize Iraq. If they have a strategy, I haven't heard it. Maybe they figure that when faced with a choice of God or capitalism, that capitalism would win hands down. Or maybe they thought they would figure that out later. Either way, I think it's going to be a tougher road than they expected.

Re: "There is no contradiction between the Iraqi people preferring the culture promoted by Saddam and yet preferring him to be out of power."

Well, I think there is a stark one. What Saddam promoted, including his version of "culture," is EXACTLY why they are glad he's out. Mind you, if you are on to anything, it ought tell you that I have NOT said they don't want their religion. Saddam oppressed free expression of religion, insisting he himself was the appropriate figure to worship.
