Investors debated the meaning of the latest Challenger, Gray & Christmas survey, which indicated that announced job cuts surged in October. Of concern is the idea that consumer spending, which has been the glue holding this recovery together, and a primary source of optimism that fed the past year's stock market rally, may dissolve in a swell of job losses. We think it is just that, an idea. Given sentiment as it is, investors will remain on edge until Friday's October employment data, and this will remain a trader's market until it is clear that the baton has passed from consumer spending to enterprise spending.--Ping Yu, Briefing.com
