Frank,
What is "NFG"?

The problem that some on this board have with Jacob's use of the term "patriot" is that they are disposed to use as a positive attribute, while he uses it as a way of describing anyone who claims to be motivated to support their country. Not to belabor the obvious, but that is the problem that some people have with patriotism, that it can be and has been used to motivated people to some pretty terrible actions. Not just in Cambodia, but, for example, the Confederates in the US thought they were being "patriotic" in defending the South--their identification was with their section and, as they might have put it, their "way of life" rather than the United States as a "singular" entity. One fairly well known formulation by historians is that the Civil War changed "United States" from a plural to a singular noun.
