"There are a lot of human civilizations where the distinction isn't relevant any more than it is with bees." One of the problem we (humans) have in discussing abortion is the fact that some of us view our existence essentially different. It is a divisive difference when we need to establish mores or laws of governance that all are required abide by. Citizenship is a solidly unifying concept to distinguish who gets included and who doesn't. Humanness, degrees of humanness, soul involved vs lump of flesh, etc are less distinctive however no less dismissable by many of us.
