These are the answers I got from military folk on what the problem really was. A variety of answers. "Reports point to a MANPAD, such as a Strela or SAM-7. What they are talking about is the emitter mounted on the aircraft to confuse the missile seeker head. It may have had one operating, but they aren't 100% effective. " "I have a different sort of question: If local Iraqi's had a MANPAD system, why wait till now to use it? I'm guessing the system, and the trained operator to fire it, was brought in from outside the country. Syria or Palis? " "A flare dispenser or an exhaust deflector, angling the exhaust upwards, not so visible to heat-seeking missiles. That's the 70s-80s solution, not sure it would have worked this time around. Chinooks just can't maneuver very fast- we have a family friend who pilots them in the Army who just came back from Afghanistan- said they are the only choppers that can handle the rarified air there at those altitudes, and that they are sitting ducks in the air, even with armor (which just slows them down even more). "Dirty Dick" Durbin is one of the more anti-military Senators. His comments have nothing to do with concern for the safety of our personnel. It is a thinly veiled attack on the Bush Administration for "failing" to keep our guys and gals safe. Oh, in case you're wondering, "Dirty Dick" is what his FRIENDS call him. Those of us who suffer under his extreme anti-gun tyranny call him MUCH worse. SA-7s (being late 60's missiles) will chase flares... They will also lock onto the sun... SA-14s are smarter, but can still be fooled... The greatest weakness, of course, is you have to see the missile coming in time to activate the defenses... Which is why more 'modern' systems like the ones found in newer-production C-130s have some form of detection system for passive-IR missiles (radar-assisted IR (AAMs and most vehicle-mounted ADS systems) have allways been detectable. Optical is harder...) that allows the system to auto-launch flares... "How about a flight path and altitude that avoids built up areas? These Soldiers need to remain "tactical", even when in transport mode." "On the news vids, you will see guys sitting on the open rear loading ramps of helicopters and C-130s with a button in their hand. It is my understanding that this crewman is watching for missles and if he sees one he pushes the button to start the IR countermeasures that will hopefully defeat the missle. "
